Comedy

Good Omens by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett

9/10

Good Omens is a mix of fantasy and comedy, and is written in an amusing style that makes it a parody while still moving forward a unique plot. The book is set throughout history, starting with the biblical creation of the human race, though most of the plot takes place in the modern world. While there are religioius aspects to it, most notably being the two main characters (an angel and a demon), the book can be enjoyed regardless of religious beliefs or lack thereof. Personally, I found this book to be extremely amusing. The humor was different from other comedy books that I have read, being more subtle and less based around people making fools out of themselves. An example of this is one of the extremely minor characters, who is only really referenced and doesn't play a part, is named "Thou-Shall-Not-Commit-Adultery Pulsifer". Little absurd bits like this make you giggle while you are reading it without getting the second-hand embarassment that I know I hate in most comedies. Also, the writing style of this book is amusing, due to the interesting phrasing and funny asides that the narrator makes, such as a bit about the Earth being a Libra in terms of zodiac signs. All of these little amusing things add up into a book that is extremely amusing to read. It most definitely isn't written in the stuffy manner that we have come to expect from a lot of books, which is the main reason that I enjoy it. All in all, I would highly recommend this book to everyone, simply to get a taste of the unique writing style and sense of humor contained within it.
